Culver High Alumni Bio's

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead
where there is no path and leave a trail.

~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Name-Maiden Name: John Fier

Year Graduated: 1961

Occupation-Occupations: The last twenty years I fixed houses. Before that I fell off the edge of the Earth. Life was a ramble.

Where are you living now: West of Petaluma, CA.

Marital Status: My partner Thea of 16 years.

Children: 3

Grandchildren: 0

Great-Grandchildren: 0

After graduation: I fell in with a group of people in Northern California and we eventually moved to Maine. Where I cleared land by hand and built many things and buildings by hand. Then one day 19 years later, I awoke and returned to this culture. Such a journey. I still awake today thinking "Life. It's so extraordinary!"

What were your favorite places in Culver City: Across the street from our home was a Japanese family and their farm. They had just returned from an internment camp, which I only learned in my forties. I hoed weeds play with their son and ate string beans from their stand in the hot sun. I bicycled to the marina and watched people turn navy landing craft into boats they dreamed to motor to Brazil. Hamburger Handout on Jefferson Blvd. handed out burgers at 25 cents a pop. I was constantly escaping Culver City and going to the beach.

Interests: Being with my Thea and my friends. I like boats. I go to the desert when I can and spend time alone. I like my tools and still  use them. Still make things. Still fix things. I like talking with people.

Additional Comments: People like myself would be better off going to school in our forties: because early in life all I wanted to do was immerse myself in the world; I wanted to labor amongst men. Today with my body in pain from all that labor, I am more serious and a voracious reader.  Everything is fair game for deconstructing and discussing. So be this strange life I have been given.
